#1 Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Without a doubt, the most exciting player in the world to watch. Ronaldo's premiere combination of speed, agility, and technical ability make him a threat to score every time he touches the ball. It's no secret that Ronaldo has thrived for both Manchester United and now Real Madrid, but he has not carried this form over to the national time. With Portugal playing in a group with Brazil, North Korea, and Ivory Coast, Ronaldo will need to come to play every game. He seems to have matured since Portugal's run to the semi-finals in 06, and the team is decidedly his to run. However Portugal plays, millions of people will be holding their breath every time number 17 touches the ball.

#2 Wayne Rooney (England)

There may not be a single player more important to his team's success at the WC than Rooney. While England has a talented squad, they have failed to live up to expectations since winning the WC on their home turf in 1966. Rooney could singlehandly change this. Playing up front, Rooney will serve as both a creator and finisher for Fabio Capello's side. Rooney possesses imagination and creativity that make him fun to watch, and he also brings an unprecidented concentration and intensity to every match he plays in. Be sure to watch the USA and England today at 1:30. Should be a good one.

#3 Lionel Messi (Argentina)

AHHH real quick. Messi possesses the foot skills and lightning speed to make your jaw drop, while still somehow working within the framework of his team. Make no mistake though, Messi is the focal point of Argentina's offense. Double videos for the short write up:

#4 Andres Iniesta (Spain)

On a supremely talented Spanish team, you would be hard pressed to find a stand-out player. But Andres Iniesta has emerged as Spain's leader and arguably best player. While Iniesta's stats won't raise any eyebrows, (only one goal for Barcelona this past year) it's the intangibles and game sense that make Iniesta so good. Wayne Rooney called Iniesta the best player in the world following the 2009 Champions League final. Iniesta does everything on the pitch, defense, offense, and he is perfectly content being two passes away from a goal. It's this kind of unselfish play which will benefit talented Spanish strikers Fernando Torres and David Villa. If Iniesta plays the way he is capable, Spain look to be the overwhelming favorites to take home the Cup.

World Cup 2010

First off, I know this is a music blog. But anyone who knows me, knows I love football (soccer). And the excitement for the impending World Cup has spilled over to this. Even if you hate soccer, or sports, the WC is something to pay attention to. So although it has nothing to do with music, I have decided to name my top 5 players to watch. I will do one a day leading up to Friday, when I will do two. The games start Friday morning with host South Africa playing Mexico at 10am. So without further ado, I present my #5 player to watch at the WC.
